Volunteer with Front Yards In Bloom

Front Yards in Bloom (FYiB) rewards Edmonton gardeners for creating beautiful front yards that enhance the city. The Program Lead works with City of Edmonton staff and other partners. In recent years, the City of Edmonton has taken care of receiving nominations, assigning delivery areas to sign delivery volunteers, and providing signs and other supplies. Responsibilities are heaviest from March through August.

Duties include:

  • Establish deadlines and dates
  • Coordinate with partner groups and sponsors
  • Advertise
  • Recruit and train volunteer judges, provide judges’ packages
  • Receive judging sheets
  • Organize final-round judging for the categories that are judged by EHS
  • Help organize the awards event
  • Report to the Board

Other volunteer roles include:

Sign delivery and first round judging: take a list of addresses, find the location, view the front garden and put up a sign. Select the top two front yards on your list and submit the addresses with two to three photographs to City of Edmonton. If you are unsure of what to look for, training sessions are held in June. No horticultural knowledge is required, just a love of gardens.
