SUMMARY:Speaker Series March 2026
DESCRIPTION:From Aesthetics to Ecology: The New Garden Paradigm \nAcross the globe\, people are reimagining the role of gardens. Beyond beauty\, gardens can be places of ecological resilience and profound meaning. In a growing movement\, designers are creating landscapes that support biodiversity\, adapt to change\, and offer richer human experiences. \nThis new paradigm in garden design\, often called naturalistic planting\, represents a shift from decoration toward ecology\, and from maintenance toward coexistence. It treats plantings as living systems shaped by design\, time\, and care. \nNathaniel and Claire will explore the influential designers and projects leading this movement\, the environmental and experiential benefits it brings for both nature and people\, and how these ideas are being adapted within our own culture and climate through a case study from their Alberta garden. \nThe Zoom link for EHS Members can be found HERE. \n————————— \nPresenter Bios \nNathaniel Hannemann \nPrincipal of Polyflora Studio\, Nathaniel is a garden designer and horticulturist whose work bridges ecological design and artistry. His Edmonton-based practice focuses on creating immersive\, resilient gardens that integrate beauty\, biodiversity\, and long-term care. \nClaire Hannemann \nClaire\, Nathaniel’s sister\, is a communications specialist and horticulturist with a passion for connecting people to nature through education and storytelling. \nTo learn more about their work\, visit polyflorastudio.ca

SUMMARY:Speaker Series June 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation from Milena McWatt from Wild Calm Forest Therapy on nature therapy and the benefits of nature as well as gardening for both mind and body.\n\n\nMilena is a certified guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. The seed of and name of Wild Calm was planted in 2018 when she was spending a lot of time alone in the woods with her dog. She instinctually retreated into the forest as she was struggling through a severe bout of depression. And it really helped. She looked around online to see if there was something to it. She stumbled upon the ANFT site and realized that forest therapy IS A THING and it would be a calling she could answer. Sharing the health benefits the forest can provide with others is something she is so grateful to be able to do.\nDoors open at 6:45\, speaker at 7:30.

DESCRIPTION:Prairie Peonies – Cultivating with Beauty with Nick Maycher\n Nick is a florist by trade\, a peony enthusiast\, and a collector and appreciator of the visual arts. He is also the gardener behind Prairie Peonies. During his time living in Japan the peony captivated and bestowed a sense of wonder in him and inspired a lifelong passion for growing them. Join us as he shares his story\, more about his collection\, and everything about growing gorgeous peonies in Edmonton. \nMore about Nick\nI started growing peonies in my early twenties and have been at it for about ten years now. I am a volunteer with both the Canadian and American Peony Society. \nMy display garden is located on a city lot in west Edmonton and after making the most of every available inch of growing space\, the collection now contains about 130 cultivars. \nThe goal of the garden is to educate and inspire. The cultivars have been selected to represent the diverse forms and colours of the peony and the garden contains historic heirloom varieties\, Gold Medal winners\, trailblazing new introductions\, fragrant wonders\, garden novelties\, best landscapers\, and rare\, collector varieties. \nMy recent focus has been acquiring some of the recently introduced advanced generation hybrids and rare varieties that won’t be found in many gardens elsewhere in Canada. I have also been dedicating a lot of time to hybridizing\, and with that comes growing plants from seed. \nThe Alberta Regional Lily Society will be holding a bulb sale in conjunction with this meeting.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series – 2022 March
DESCRIPTION:Join Edmonton Horticultural Society for our first IN PERSON meeting in a couple of years! The speaker will start at 7:30 pm\, but come early to mix and mingle with old and new friends! \nSharon Wallish Murphy\, host of Gardening With Sharon\, and Nadine Stielow from Thiel’s Greenhouses will talk about the latest trends in gardening for 2022! \nAbout Sharon\nSharon is a passionate 3rd generation horticulturist specializing in annuals and perennials. She has over 30 years of gardening and greenhouse-growing experience both in Alberta and on the tropical island of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Her family has been in the greenhouse business for over 100 years. She loves gardening\, children\, family\, music\, and all things life-giving. \n  \n  \nAbout Nadine\nNadine Stielow grew up in the Bruderheim area\, and she frequently visited Thiel’s Greenhouses with her mother and grandmother\, starting when she was a little girl. It was there that her passion for horticulture started. While her career took her down other paths to start\, it seemed only natural that when the Thiel family were looking to sell after 50 years in business\, the Stielow family would jump right in. \nThe Stielows have introduced new energy to the already established company. Growth and upgrades to the facilities\, processes and selection have been priority while also focusing on product quality. With new offerings in the selection of garden supplies\, fertilizers and tools\, the Stielows are doing their best to be your source for everything in your garden.
