This is an opportunity to hang out with other nature enthusiasts and learn more about this local nature gem! \nWhat to bring: \n\nRubber boots\nSnacks/Lunch\nWater Bottle\nMosquito Spray\n\nAbout our Tour Guide: \nDave Ealey has been involved with Wagner Natural Area since 1982\, before there was a Society. As a professional biologist\, Dave has an environmental background\, which helps in coordinating the responsibilities of the Society for site management\, public education and outreach\, and citizen science-type research projects. In recent years\, Dave has been enthusiastic about getting support for hiring of summer students to carry out much of the site and visitor management needed to protect the natural area.\nA little bit about Wagner Natural Area from their website:\nLocated between Edmonton and Spruce Grove\, in the middle of agricultural fields and industrial development\, Wagner Natural Area stands out as a microcosm of boreal forest . Its varied habitats include calcareous fens and marl ponds\, willow swamps\, drier coniferous and deciduous forests\, creeks\, and hay fields. These habitats\, most particularly the fens\, account for the rich diversity of plant life including several wild orchids\, carnivorous plants\, and mosses. Insects\, amphibians \, and birds are abundant\, with larger mammals such as white-tailed deer and moose also inhabiting the area. \nBecause of the moisture content in much of the soil\, it is advisable to have waterproof boots with you when visiting the Natural Area. In the spring and summer\, it is also advisable to have insect repellent with you to fend off any mosquitoes who may find you. While there is no drinking water in the Natural Area\, a Picnic Shelter and Outhouse are provided near the start of the Marl Pond Trail. \nLearn more here: wagnerfen.ca \n

Join Janet Melrose and Sheryl Normandeau for a lively and informative talk about gardening year-round in climate-controlled conditions! Plants outside their natural habitat need a totally different kind of tender love and care\, and Janet and Sheryl will explore all of the ins and outs you need to know for successful indoor growing. They will cover topics such as: \n\nnatural and artificial light\ntemperature\ngrowing medium\ntroubleshooting potential issues\n\nThey will also guide you with plant inspiration\, including recommendations for herbs\, spices\, fruit\, vegetables\, microgreens\, sprouts\, and even kitchen scraps. A writer and master gardener\, Sheryl holds a bachelor’s degree in English\, as well as a Prairie Horticulture Certificate and an Urban Sustainable Agriculture Certificate. \nJanet Melrose \nJANET MELROSE was born in Trinidad\, West Indies\, but has lived in Calgary since 1969. She is a master gardener and the creator and owner of the successful horticulture business Calgary’s Cottage Gardener\, which specializes in garden education and consultation\, horticultural therapy\, and advocating for sustainable local food systems.

DESCRIPTION:Radical Cognition: What Decisions Can Plants Make?\nPlants can’t move\, so decisions about where to grow leaves or roots are crucial. Research shows they communicate\, adjust growth based on neighbours\, and even change responses with experience. Yet debates over terms like cognition and sentience—and inconsistent studies—have slowed progress. \nDr. Tanya Shoot will share a new research framework developed during their postdoctoral work in the Cahill Lab at the University of Alberta. This approach compares responses across plant species\, focuses on realistic environmental challenges\, and looks for signature decision-making patterns without assuming plant consciousness. Tanya will highlight current experiments exploring how plants sense and process information\, and how this work can deepen our understanding of decision-making across all organisms. Attendees are invited to share their own curious plant observations. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Tanya Shoot is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton. Their research explores how animals and plants make decisions\, focusing on the roles of personality\, environment\, and information processing. During their postdoctoral work at the University of Alberta\, they have studied behaviour across multiple species—from zebrafish\, guppies\, and fruit flies to plant decision-making. \nA lifelong plant enthusiast\, Tanya has tended everything from houseplants to native rain-garden species. Their academic and personal passions for plant behaviour now intersect in their ongoing research at Concordia University of Edmonton.
