Front Yards in Bloom

Celebrating lovely front gardens in Edmonton

The Edmonton Horticultural Society encourages beautiful neighbourhoods. We believe that with just a little tender loving care, every front yard can contribute to our city’s landscape. Front Yards in Bloom is an annual program to:

  • Promote beautiful front yards that improve the image of the community
  • Recognize homeowners’ efforts at enhancing their property
  • Profile top yards as models for others
  • Encourage community involvement
  • Enhance Edmonton’s participation in the National Communities in Bloom competition

Winterscapes is the seasonal alternative to the summer FYiB. Please see this link for program details.

An enduring partnership: Since 1999, the EHS has worked with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and City of Edmonton to make Front Yards in Bloom an integral part of the Edmonton growing season. Joined by the volunteer efforts of the Edmonton Native Plant Group, Sustainable Food Edmonton, Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, and Great Neighbourhoods, the program continues to grow. In 2016, EHS volunteers logged over 600 hours to place signs and review nominated gardens.

Nominate a friend’s or neighbour’s front yard this Summer!

We encourage friends, relatives, neighbours and passers-by to nominate attractive yards in any Edmonton neighbourhood. Every nomination receives a sign and a certificate.

Nomination categories:

  • General
  • Natural Front Yard
  • Edible Front Yard
  • Tiny Yards
  • Public Spaces

Judging: Volunteer judges visit each yard after the nomination deadline to deliver a yard sign and certificate. They select top yards for special recognition.

Volunteer: Consider being a judge. Invite a friend to get involved, too. Judging yards is a great way to see beautiful gardens and enjoy a walk in the neighbourhood. It is easy and fun!

Judging workshops are offered each year. No horticultural expertise required, just a love of admiring gardens.
