Meet artist Lisa Matthias and see an exhibit of her work. \n\nDrop-in anytime from noon to 4:00pm to celebrate another wonderful season at George Pegg Garden. Throughout the summer our Artist in Residence Lisa Matthias has been creating art inspired by the plants\, animals\, and historic buildings. We are excited for you to see her newest woodcuts\, etchings\, and prints. Lisa will have some art for sale.\nWe had a generous donation of dahlia plants to sell this summer – some are still available. All afternoon\, our friend and dahlia grower David Stephenson will be sharing his tips for dividing dahlias and overwintering them indoors.\nTake a stroll around the Garden and find a beautiful backdrop for some family photos.\nSeptember 27 is World Tourism Day. Check out our Northwest of 16 Tourism Association poster and explore their interactive map of tourism destinations in the area.\nHave you been using iNaturalist to identify plants and animals? Participate in the iNat Together 2026 Global Campaign from September 18-28. Bring your cellphone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. When you wander down the nature trail you’re sure to find something interesting to photograph. If you are new to iNaturalist we can help you get started!\nFriendly dogs on leash are welcome.

SUMMARY:Wagner Natural Area Tour - August 22\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Save the Date! \nJoin us for a botanical nature walk through the Wagner Natural Area from 11am-2pm. This is an opportunity to hang out with other nature enthusiasts and learn more about this local nature gem! \nWhat to bring: \n\nRubber boots\nSnacks/Lunch\nWater Bottle\nMosquito Spray\n\nAbout our Tour Guide: \nDave Ealey has been involved with Wagner Natural Area since 1982\, before there was a Society. As a professional biologist\, Dave has an environmental background\, which helps in coordinating the responsibilities of the Society for site management\, public education and outreach\, and citizen science-type research projects. In recent years\, Dave has been enthusiastic about getting support for hiring of summer students to carry out much of the site and visitor management needed to protect the natural area.\nA little bit about Wagner Natural Area from their website:\nLocated between Edmonton and Spruce Grove\, in the middle of agricultural fields and industrial development\, Wagner Natural Area stands out as a microcosm of boreal forest . Its varied habitats include calcareous fens and marl ponds\, willow swamps\, drier coniferous and deciduous forests\, creeks\, and hay fields. These habitats\, most particularly the fens\, account for the rich diversity of plant life including several wild orchids\, carnivorous plants\, and mosses. Insects\, amphibians \, and birds are abundant\, with larger mammals such as white-tailed deer and moose also inhabiting the area. \nBecause of the moisture content in much of the soil\, it is advisable to have waterproof boots with you when visiting the Natural Area. In the spring and summer\, it is also advisable to have insect repellent with you to fend off any mosquitoes who may find you. While there is no drinking water in the Natural Area\, a Picnic Shelter and Outhouse are provided near the start of the Marl Pond Trail. \nLearn more here: wagnerfen.ca \n

SUMMARY:2026 North American Rock Garden Society Conference & AGM
DESCRIPTION:High & Dry in the Chinook Zone: 2026 North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) Conference & Annual General Meeting\nCome celebrate rock-loving plants and rock gardens on the western edge of the Northern Great Plains\, within sight of the Rocky Mountains. The conference theme reflects conditions enabling and frustrating rock gardeners in Calgary. Owing to its elevation (1045 m\, 3400 ft) and associated cool nights\, Calgary provides favorable conditions for rock and alpine gardens\, despite the challenges of warm\, drying winds (Chinooks) punctuating otherwise cold winters.  These conditions allow the cultivation of plants from many steppe and alpine regions\, especially those that benefit from (or tolerate) dry summers.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - April 2026
DESCRIPTION:Growing Gladiolus with Glad Man 2.0 (Andy Schalk)\nThe presentation will discuss corm size and quality\, planting\, stem harvest\, corm harvest\, corm storage\, and pest management. Following the presentation\, Andy will have a selection of corms available for sale. \nThe speaker\, The Glad Man\, will have gladiolus corms for sale AND the Lily Society will have bulbs too. Stock up on everything you need for a great garden this season! \nAbout Andy:\nAndy Schalk was inspired to start growing glads in 2018 for his son’s July wedding. After receiving 100 corms from his father-in-law and advice from Edmonton horticultural expert\, Jim Hole\, Andy’s journey with glads began. The challenge would be to produce early glads to bloom for the July 14th wedding. They ended up a success and Andy found his new hobby. In 2020\, two ladies from Edmonton asked to buy his cut glads and Andy realized there could be a market for these beautiful blooms. Since his start in 2018\, and with support from his wife and children\, he has grown over 75\,000 glads and is now the largest grower of glads in Alberta. Through social media\, he has gained international attention and is eager to share his passion\, along with growing techniques.
