SUMMARY:Speaker Series March 2026
DESCRIPTION:From Aesthetics to Ecology: The New Garden Paradigm \nAcross the globe\, people are reimagining the role of gardens. Beyond beauty\, gardens can be places of ecological resilience and profound meaning. In a growing movement\, designers are creating landscapes that support biodiversity\, adapt to change\, and offer richer human experiences. \nThis new paradigm in garden design\, often called naturalistic planting\, represents a shift from decoration toward ecology\, and from maintenance toward coexistence. It treats plantings as living systems shaped by design\, time\, and care. \nNathaniel and Claire will explore the influential designers and projects leading this movement\, the environmental and experiential benefits it brings for both nature and people\, and how these ideas are being adapted within our own culture and climate through a case study from their Alberta garden. \nThe Zoom link for EHS Members can be found HERE. \n————————— \nPresenter Bios \nNathaniel Hannemann \nPrincipal of Polyflora Studio\, Nathaniel is a garden designer and horticulturist whose work bridges ecological design and artistry. His Edmonton-based practice focuses on creating immersive\, resilient gardens that integrate beauty\, biodiversity\, and long-term care. \nClaire Hannemann \nClaire\, Nathaniel’s sister\, is a communications specialist and horticulturist with a passion for connecting people to nature through education and storytelling. \nTo learn more about their work\, visit polyflorastudio.ca

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - April 2026
DESCRIPTION:Growing Gladiolus with Glad Man 2.0 (Andy Schalk)\nThe presentation will discuss corm size and quality\, planting\, stem harvest\, corm harvest\, corm storage\, and pest management. Following the presentation\, Andy will have a selection of corms available for sale. \nThe speaker\, The Glad Man\, will have gladiolus corms for sale AND the Lily Society will have bulbs too. Stock up on everything you need for a great garden this season! \nAbout Andy:\nAndy Schalk was inspired to start growing glads in 2018 for his son’s July wedding. After receiving 100 corms from his father-in-law and advice from Edmonton horticultural expert\, Jim Hole\, Andy’s journey with glads began. The challenge would be to produce early glads to bloom for the July 14th wedding. They ended up a success and Andy found his new hobby. In 2020\, two ladies from Edmonton asked to buy his cut glads and Andy realized there could be a market for these beautiful blooms. Since his start in 2018\, and with support from his wife and children\, he has grown over 75\,000 glads and is now the largest grower of glads in Alberta. Through social media\, he has gained international attention and is eager to share his passion\, along with growing techniques.

With our pollinators in decline\, it’s more important than ever to learn simple\, effective ways you can support these essential species as a gardener. \nIn this presentation\, we’ll explore their incredible diversity of native bees and how they differ from managed bees like honeybees. Ilan will shine some light on the many risks that these little pollinators face and what you can do to help. Learn how you can help create a future for bees and biodiversity alike\, right in your own backyard! \nAbout the Speaker\nIlan Domnich is the Native Bee Stewardship Specialist for the Alberta Native Bee Council\, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of native bee communities through research and education.\nAn entomologist by training\, Ilan completed his MSc at the University of Alberta\, where he focused on entomology extension in agriculture. He also holds a BSc in Animal Biology and a BCom in Finance\, combining science and business to support pollinator conservation.

SUMMARY:2026 North American Rock Garden Society Conference & AGM
DESCRIPTION:High & Dry in the Chinook Zone: 2026 North American Rock Garden Society (NARGS) Conference & Annual General Meeting\nCome celebrate rock-loving plants and rock gardens on the western edge of the Northern Great Plains\, within sight of the Rocky Mountains. The conference theme reflects conditions enabling and frustrating rock gardeners in Calgary. Owing to its elevation (1045 m\, 3400 ft) and associated cool nights\, Calgary provides favorable conditions for rock and alpine gardens\, despite the challenges of warm\, drying winds (Chinooks) punctuating otherwise cold winters.  These conditions allow the cultivation of plants from many steppe and alpine regions\, especially those that benefit from (or tolerate) dry summers.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series - November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Radical Cognition: What Decisions Can Plants Make?\nPlants can’t move\, so decisions about where to grow leaves or roots are crucial. Research shows they communicate\, adjust growth based on neighbours\, and even change responses with experience. Yet debates over terms like cognition and sentience—and inconsistent studies—have slowed progress. \nDr. Tanya Shoot will share a new research framework developed during their postdoctoral work in the Cahill Lab at the University of Alberta. This approach compares responses across plant species\, focuses on realistic environmental challenges\, and looks for signature decision-making patterns without assuming plant consciousness. Tanya will highlight current experiments exploring how plants sense and process information\, and how this work can deepen our understanding of decision-making across all organisms. Attendees are invited to share their own curious plant observations. \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Tanya Shoot is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton. Their research explores how animals and plants make decisions\, focusing on the roles of personality\, environment\, and information processing. During their postdoctoral work at the University of Alberta\, they have studied behaviour across multiple species—from zebrafish\, guppies\, and fruit flies to plant decision-making. \nA lifelong plant enthusiast\, Tanya has tended everything from houseplants to native rain-garden species. Their academic and personal passions for plant behaviour now intersect in their ongoing research at Concordia University of Edmonton.
